Berkeley Haynsworth Little, 62, wife of James Bryan Little, jr. died at home on Thursday, August 19, 2010.
Born in Aiken, SC, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Custis Hall Haynsworth of Greenville and the late Berkeley Tarver Haynsworth of Aiken. She was predeceased by her brother, Theodore Tarver Prichard.
Mrs. Little moved to Greenville in 1969 after marrying her husband of over forty years. Together they have two daughters and sons-in-law, Berkeley Little Gillentine and Andrew Ross Gillentine of Dallas, TX and Carter Little Meadors and Zane Johnson Meadors of Greenville. “Mimi” has three adored grandchildren, Zane Johnson (Jack) Meadors, jr., James Bryan (JB) Little Meadors, and her namesake, Berkeley Haynsworth (Worth) Gillentine. Also surviving are her brother, William Jesse Prichard VI of Charleston, three sisters-in-law, thirteen nieces and nephews and numerous cousins for whom she acted as a surrogate sister, mother, aunt and grandmother.
A graduate of Aiken High School, Mrs. Little earned her BA in History from Converse College where she was a Converse Scholar, Academic Marshal and later served as the President of the Greenville Chapter of the Converse Alumnae Association. In 1985, she earned her Masters in Social Work at the University of South Carolina. While there she won the Micro Practice Student Award and graduated top of her class.
Early in her career, Mrs. Little worked as a reporter for the Aiken Standard and Review, where she won a SC Women’s Press Association Award. Later she served as a columnist for the Poinsett Register of the Greenville News. Mrs. Little devoted her last twenty-five years to a private practice in personal and family counseling and was a past president of the SC Society for Clinical Social Work. In recent years, Mrs. Little also worked as an associate of The Highlands Program, offering career testing and counseling.
For over forty years, Mrs. Little has been a member of Christ Church Episcopal. She was a Sunday School teacher and a graduate of the Education For Ministry program. Addressing a need in the church and community, she assisted in founding the Canterbury Counseling Center and served as the first president. She was also involved with Christ Church Episcopal School, where she served on the Board of Trustees and was a past president of the Parents Organization.
Mrs. Little has served on the Board of Visitors for Kanuga Conference Center and the Board of Directors of the Community Center of Caesars Head, where she and her family spent their summers. Her other memberships included the Dorothy Haynsworth Garden Club, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, the Junior League of Greenville, The Assembly, The Debutante Club and the Piedmont Dance Club. She was a voracious reader and an avid rider who was devoted to her horse, Bunny.
Following a private burial, a memorial service will be held at 3:30pm Saturday, August 21, 2010 at Christ Church Episcopal with a reception to follow in McCall Parlor.
